"Remembering Sister Lini – The Angel Who Chose Service Over Self"

Today marks the 7th death anniversary of Sister Lini Puthussery, a name etched in the heart of every healthcare worker in Kerala—and beyond. A young nurse, a devoted mother of two, and a selfless caregiver, Lini lost her life in 2018 after contacting the deadly Nipah virus from a patient she was treating in Perambra, Kozhikode.

As a healthcare professional and a mother myself, her story resonates deeply within me. I can feel the weight she must have carried—the invisible battle between duty and motherhood, between protecting her family and fulfilling her calling. She didn’t hesitate. She chose to serve.

Her final words, scribbled in a letter to her husband from the isolation ward, still pierce our hearts:

I am almost on the way. I don’t think I can meet you again. Sorry. Please take care of our children well.

That letter was not just a goodbye. It was a symbol of the quiet heroism we often overlook.

Sister Lini’s story is not just hers alone. It represents the unspoken truth of every working mother in the healthcare field. We are constantly walking into infection zones, sanitizing our hands and hearts, masking our fears behind a calm smile, and returning home hoping we haven’t carried back anything harmful to the little hands waiting to hug us.

Today, I want the world to pause and remember Lini. Not just as a nurse who died of Nipah—but as a mother who chose her patients over her own safety. As a symbol of courage. As a soul who redefined sacrifice.

In our uniforms, behind our tired eyes, there are countless Linis still working every day. Let us honour her by recognizing their efforts. Let us build a world that values, supports, and protects its healthcare warriors—especially the mothers among them.

Dear Sister Lini,

You didn’t just leave us—you became a part of every nurse who steps into a ward with silent courage, every mother who kisses her child goodbye before duty, every heart that beats for humanity over self.

Your sacrifice is not forgotten. It lives on in the prayers of every healthcare worker.

It echoes in hospital corridors.

It glows in the eyes of your children, who will grow up knowing their mother was not just a nurse, but an angel who walked this earth.

We bow our heads today—not in sorrow alone, but in gratitude.

For you showed us what it means to truly serve.

And we promise—you will always be remembered.

With love. With tears. And with pride.....
